On October 11, President of the European Council Charles Michel visited the National Historical and Memorial Reserve Babyn Yar, where last week Ukraine and the world celebrated the 80th anniversary of the tragedy.
He expressed regret that he could not come at the invitation of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and take part in the official ceremony honouring the memory of the victims in Babyn Yar on October 6. Therefore, first of all, during his visit to Ukraine, he decided to visit the places of mass shootings.
Charles Michel also lit a candle near the Menorah monument and, together with Rabbi Raphael Rutman, Vice Chairman of the Board of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine, prayed in memory of those killed in the Babyn Yar tragedy in a symbolic synagogue.
